This has been a really taxing and emotional project. I think I am nearing its end. I do hope it will help to make a difference.
Again, the entire works can be viewed HERE.
Beautiful work and sad. I'm curious about the work and what level is journalistic or conceptrual portraiture. Is the oil simulated or actual? You wont have any arguement from me if it's made to look like they went swimming, I think it's great either way. Just very curious about the process of inlisting subjects, because that seems like part of the story.
ReplyDeleteThis attempt at "recreating" the situation in the gulf is weak. The big picture is that we're a country dependent on oil-such as people who live in burbs (like evanston) and continue to drive SUV's. The real effect is on that community who relies on the gulf to support their economy, and of course on the ecosystem....not depictions of upper-middle class individuals from the north shore- posing in front of lake michigan
ReplyDeleteThis project is meant to be a spring board for discussion about out environment, worldwide. They are a metaphor for a much larger issue, worldwide. In my artist statement on my website I state,
ReplyDelete"Living on the shores of Lake Michigan, I am acutely aware of the disastrous toll the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico has taken on all forms of life, especially as our beaches opened to the 2010 swimming season. This environmental, social and economic catastrophe highlights a much larger problem that has inflicted untold suffering as we exploit the earth’s resources worldwide.
We are all responsible for leading lives that create demand for unsustainable energy.
We are also all responsible for the solution and we must work together to protect the balance of life."
The work was created out of a deep concern for our environment worldwide. I am sorry if you did not find these images moving.
